Windsor Police Chief Justin Jackson said officers were twice called to the Windsor Food Mart, commonly referred to as Pur\jab, on Oct 22 and Oct 25 after the convenience store was broken into. On Oct 22, Windsor Police Of ficer Jessie Mizelle went to the Food Center after the owner re ported opening the building and finding it had been burglarized. Officer Mizelle discovered the suspect had entered through the roof, stole 60 cartons of cigarettes and loose change from the store. The suspect reportedly moved a soda machine to allow him to exit through the ceiling. Officer Mizelle identified the suspect as a white male with a slim build and average height. He was able to lift fingerprints and view video surveillance of the break in. Three days later, Wmdsor Police Cpl. Chris Leggett and Officer To nya Todd were dispatched to the Windsor Food Mart in reference to another breaking and entering. The suspect was gone before the officers arrived and did not appear to have been in the store long, but also entered through the ceiling. Following an investigation by Det. Sgt. Jason Thomas and the officers involved in the incident, a suspect was developed and a search warrant obtained. Officers went to 112 Bull Hill Road in Windsor to serve a search warrant on the property in which Gilbert Don Hurst resided. Annual 5K was a success BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Managing Editor WINDSOR - It was a perfect day for a run. The 12th Annual 5k run and walk, now known as the Bertie Spectacular was a success this year despite the lingering threat of COVID-19. Last year, the event was held vir tually as a precaution due to the CO\dD-19 pandemic.. The annual event brings runners from aU over to Bertie County, which helps raise funds for the Good Shep herd Food Pantry. “We couldn’t have asked for more enthusiasm fi-om the participants. We appreciate all of the support from the community,” said Spectacular com mittee member Michelle Leicester. Runners could pre-register for the event, and attendants were available at 8 am. the morning of the race to sign up last minute runners. According to Leicester, several runners signed up the morning of the run. Bertie County Emergen cy Management Director Mitch Cooper gave the Ber tie County Commissioners a staffing update Monday night. The update was part of an ongoing discussion between the commissioners and Cooper from the September meeting regarding tAdepart- ment’s employee shortage. According to Cooper at the September meeting, the department was short 10 employees, which led to be ing a whole shift of employ ees short. The department has been using overtime firom other employees to cover the va cant shift. In the most recent up date, Cooper confirmed the department is stiU eight em ployees short. “We have had one em ployee transfer paramedic status, and another em ployee who was part-time change to full-time status. This fills two positions but still leave us eight employ ees short. We are stiU one truck short,” said Cooper. The county did receive a Federal Emergency Man agement Agency ambulance and two paramedics to help with the strain on the de partment. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, the Garden of Eden Club will host their 2021 Annual Hol iday Limcheon and Floral Design Fundraiser. The fundraiser is the only annual, one of its kind that is hosted by the club and seeks to be a learning event that is open to the public. The theme this year is “A Walk in the Woods,” the name coined ^tly to de scribe the style of the de signer, Missie Harrell. Harrell, an Edenton floral designer with her own dis tinct style and design philos ophy, will be presenting var ious floral demonstrations at the luncheon. According to a statement from the club, Harrell in corporates “the beauty of fresh flowers with her finds foraged from woodland and town walks.” Some of her arrangements include lichen-covered branches, driftwood, seedpods and cones. 'These notable elements give the unique designs both structure and originality, ac cording to the club. See LUNCHEON, A5 Causey headlines Veteran’s Day program in Bertie County A Veteran’s Day ceremo ny will be held at the Bertie County Courthouse Square at 11 am. on Thursday, Nov. 11. 'The event will be spon sored by the Wmdsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce, the Bertie Ledger-Advance, the town of Windsor and Bertie County. In this edition “COVID-19 has forced us to miss the last two Memori al Day programs,” Windsor/ Bertie Chamber of Com merce Executive Director Lewis Hoggard said. “We felt it was important not to let Veteran’s Day slip by without recognizing those who have served our coun try in the Armed Forces.” The pro gram will be highh^t- ed by N.C. Commis sioner of Insurance Mike Causey Mike Cau sey, who served in the United States Army.
